It’s a new week in major junior hockey and with that comes the CHL top 10 rankings, top players of the week and other news.
This week’s CHL top 10 rankings saw the London Knights continue to sit at the top spot for the third consecutive month as they have a CHL best 43 wins on the season. Three fellow OHL members joined them as the Windsor Spitfires slid in at six, Kitchener Rangers at eight and the Brantford Bulldogs at 10.
The WHL also checked in with four teams as the Spokane Chiefs checked in at four, Everett Silvertips at five, Medicine Hat Tigers at seven and the Calgary Hitmen at nine.
In the QMJHL, the Moncton Wildcats slid in at the two spot while this year’s Memorial Cup host, the Rimouski Océanic slid in at three. Rimouski has won four in a row and holds the third-best points percentage of any club in the CHL at .745.
It was announced Tuesday Seattle Kraken prospect and current Spokane Chiefs star Berkly Catton received the WHL Player of the Week honor. It’s his second weekly award of the season and Spokane’s fourth in the last six weeks.
He led all WHL skaters with two goals and seven assists for nine points in three games while helping the Chiefs lock down a 2025 playoff berth.
Staying in the US Division, the WHL’s Goaltender of the Week came from the Seattle Thunderbirds. It was announced Tuesday that Buffalo Sabres prospect Scott Ratzlaff had received the honor. The Buffalo prospect helped the Thunderbirds with a 3-0-0-0 record, a smooth 1.33 goals-against average, a .959 save percentage and one shutout.
The WHL’s Rookie of the Week came from the Eastern Conference leading Medicine Hat Tigers. Goaltender Jordan Switzer led all WHL netminders with a 2-0-0-0 record, a .50 goals-against average, a sparkling .982 save percentage and one shutout.
In other news, the WHL will reportedly be adding two franchises in British Columbia over the course of the next two seasons. Both markets currently host Junior-A British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) franchises.
The Penticton Vees franchise is expected to join next season after reportedly paying the WHL and Kelowna Rockets a fee to enter and for being in the Rockets territory.
Then for the 2026-27 season, reports are that Chilliwack will be getting a franchise once again. It’s unknown if that franchise would go by the Chiefs brand the current BCHL team has right now or if they’d be rebranding.
It wouldn’t be Chilliwack’s first time having a WHL franchise. From 2006-2011 the city had the Chilliwack Bruins before they were purchased and relocated to Victoria, BC and rebranded the Royals.
These reports come after the NCAA and CHL reached an agreement where players could go to NCAA schools after players were previously only able to go to USports in Canada. This caused the BCHL and other Junior-A leagues to not be as important of a route for players. The BCHL has been said to be the top Junior-A league along with the United States Hockey League (USHL).
