FIVE MINUTE MAJORS CHL league finals and more.

It’s a new week of major junior playoff hockey so with that come updates on each of the three league championship series and other news.
In the WHL’s Western Conference, Seattle Kraken prospect and Spokane Chiefs captain Berkly Catton made his presence felt once again as he brought home the WHL Player of the Week honor.
Catton led all WHL skaters with three goals and one assist for four points in the first two games of the WHL Championship Series against the Medicine Hat Tigers.
Sticking with the Chiefs, the WHL Rookie of the Week was Spokane forward Mathis Preston who led all WHL rookies with a goal and an assist for two points in the first two games of the WHL Championship Series. It’s the second straight week and the third time this season Preston has received the honor.
On the other end of the matchup, Medicine Hat goaltender Harrison Meneghin was once again named WHL Goaltender of the Week. The 20-year-old went 1-1-0-0 with a 3.50 goals-against average, a .887 save percentage and 55 saves to open the 2025 WHL Championship Series. It’s the sixth time this season he’s earned the award in addition to Goaltender of the Month honors back in January and March.

Future WHL franchise the Penticton Vees made most of their selections this past week during their expansion draft. However, Spokane and Medicine Hat were given an extension on their players getting drafted due to them competing against each other in the WHL Championship Series.
In other related news, the current Vees has officially started chipping away at the next chapter as the team was eliminated in the BCHL Playoffs by the Brooks Bandits. They were one round shy of the Fred Page Cup Finals.
If the success of the current Vees franchise over the years indicates anything, it’s that their management should have the franchise competitive sooner rather than later once the team officially hits the ice.
Meanwhile in this year’s WHL Championship Series the Chiefs and Tigers split the first two games in Medicine Hat. The Tigers then took game three 6-0 in Spokane to take a 2-1 lead.
In the OHL the London Knights took down the Oshawa Generals 6-2 Tuesday night to take a 2-1 series lead in the OHL Championship Series.
The QMJHL saw the Moncton Wildcats with the opportunity to go up 3-0 on this year’s Memorial Cup host the Rimouski Oceanic Wednesday night.
However, even if Rimouski loses the QMJHL championship series, the Oceanic would have the chance to get revenge in the Memorial Cup since they’re the host team. The OHL’s Saginaw Spirit won the Memorial Cup as the host team just last season.
Next year’s Memorial Cup host will be the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL. Since tearing down this season from letting their head coach go and trading star players, the build has begun.  With Kelowna hosting next year’s Memorial Cup, the thought must be there that the Rockets’ new neighbor the Vees could be planning for a future bid as the newest member in the CHL.
