ST. PAUL, Minn. — Germany secured its place in next year’s World Junior Championship top division with an 8-4 win over Denmark in the relegation game on Friday at 3M Arena at Mariucci.
Germany delivered the start it needed, striking twice in the first period to build a 2-0 lead. David Lewandowski opened the scoring 37 seconds in, and Maxim Schafer doubled the advantage on the power play at 7:06. Denmark answered late in the period with a power-play goal from Mads Klyvo at 17:10 to make it 2-1 heading into intermission.
The second period swung hard in both directions. Germany pushed the lead to 4-1 with goals from Manuel Schams at 22:08 and Simon Seidl at 24:48, but Denmark clawed back into the game with two more goals. Klyvo scored again on the power play at 26:28, then Oliver Green finished the rally at 30:05 to pull Denmark within one at 4-3.
Germany separated for good in the third, capitalizing on penalties and converting when the game turned into a special teams battle. Dustin Willhoft scored on a two-man advantage at 45:04 to restore breathing room, Schams added his second of the day at 50:04, and Denmark briefly responded through Anton Linde at 51:21. Germany answered immediately with a power-play marker from Lenny Boos at 52:23, then Tobias Schwarz closed it out with an empty-net goal at 58:57.
Schams finished with two goals for Germany, while Klyvo paced Denmark with two goals and an assist. Germany also held a clear edge in shot volume, outshooting Denmark 37-22.
For Germany, it was the one win that mattered most, locking in another year among the world’s top junior nations. For Denmark, the tournament ends with relegation to Division I-A and a new target for the year ahead.
