NAHL Weekend Wrap: Undefeated Teams Make Early Statements A Wild Weekend Leaves Eleven Teams Without A Loss

The North American Hockey League delivered a weekend full of comebacks, overtime drama, offensive explosions and early-season statements.

With another full slate of games in the books, 11 teams remain undefeated, according to the current NAHL standings. Some did it with dominant performances, while others had to find a way through adversity to keep their records clean.

Three of those undefeated teams have an additional connection to JuniorHockey.io. The Oklahoma Warriors, Maryland Black Bears and Corpus Christi IceRays are all JuniorHockey.io partners, and all three continued their perfect starts over the weekend.

Maryland may have provided the weekend's most dramatic finish.

The Black Bears entered Saturday with a perfect record and found themselves trailing Johnstown 2-0 in the third period. Rather than surrender their undefeated start, Maryland mounted a late comeback.

Ajay Rai scored Maryland's first goal, Vincent Glos tied the game late in regulation, and Rai finished the comeback by scoring the overtime winner.

The 3-2 victory moved Maryland to 4-0-0 to begin the season. Rai finished with two goals, including the overtime winner, while goaltender Michael Iliff stopped 37 of Johnstown's 39 shots.

It was an entirely different story Friday, when Maryland overwhelmed the Tomahawks 8-1. The Black Bears scored four times in the opening period and never allowed Johnstown to recover.

Oklahoma also completed a weekend sweep.

The Warriors opened the weekend with a 3-2 victory over New Mexico despite facing a major third-period push from the Ice Wolves. Goaltender Jakob Hanlan was outstanding, stopping 37 of 39 shots, including 16 of 18 in the final period. Jackson Hone scored the eventual game-winner with just 88 seconds having passed after New Mexico tied the game.

Saturday was considerably more comfortable.

Oklahoma defeated New Mexico 6-1, building a 3-0 lead through two periods before adding three more goals in the third. Hanlan stopped 33 shots as the Warriors completed the weekend sweep.

Corpus Christi continues to make noise in the South Division.

The IceRays entered the weekend after sweeping El Paso the previous weekend, then went right back into the same matchup and did it again.

Friday's 4-3 overtime victory was particularly wild. Corpus Christi built a 3-0 lead before El Paso stormed back to tie the game. Oliver Czaja then ended the comeback attempt, converting a breakaway in overtime to give the IceRays the win.

Saturday was less dramatic but just as important. Corpus Christi defeated El Paso 3-1 to complete the second consecutive weekend sweep of the Rhinos.

Czaja scored again, this time on a shorthanded breakaway, while Nikita Konevych converted a penalty shot. Brodie Hankel added an empty-net goal to finish the scoring.

The Fairbanks Ice Dogs produced one of the weekend's biggest offensive statements.

Fairbanks exploded for five goals in the second period Friday on the way to a 7-3 victory over the Minnesota Mallards. The Ice Dogs outshot Minnesota 40-32, with Dane Gatmaitan and Dean Andrews among those contributing on special teams.

Saturday, Fairbanks did it again, this time overwhelming Janesville 8-2.

Gatmaitan scored twice and added two assists for a four-point night. Garrett Fischer also scored twice, while goaltender Izaak Kalis stopped 33 shots.

Fairbanks scored 15 goals across the two games.

The Northeast Generals also took care of business.

After beating Danbury 6-2 Friday, Northeast returned Saturday and completed the sweep with a 4-1 victory.

The Generals received strong goaltending from Keagin Wilson on Friday, when he stopped 33 shots. Logan Poulin scored in both games, including a shorthanded goal Saturday, as Northeast's defense limited Danbury to only three shots in each of the final two periods.

Austin's weekend was a study in resilience.

The Bruins trailed Watertown 2-1 entering the third period Friday before Kyle Sorenson tied the game. Ally Mostafaie then scored the overtime winner.

Saturday was even more dramatic.

Watertown jumped ahead 3-0 before Austin erased the deficit in less than six minutes. The Bruins eventually took a 4-3 lead before Jordan Brothers scored his second power-play goal of the night to force overtime.

Andrew Leung ended the game three minutes into the extra period.

Two games. Two comebacks. Two overtime victories.

Saturday's wildest game may have come in Forest Lake.

Minnesota jumped ahead of Anchorage 5-0, only to watch the Wolverines score four times in the third period and tie the game with less than two minutes remaining.

After a scoreless overtime, the game went to a shootout.

Ty Gordon eventually buried the deciding goal for Minnesota, giving the Mallards a 7-6 victory. Troy Wright was tested relentlessly, making 52 saves before stopping the final shootout attempt.

The Billings Cattle Punchers also enjoyed a perfect opening weekend in their series against Grand Junction.

Billings won Friday's opener 4-2, then returned Saturday and dominated the River Hawks 6-2 to complete the sweep.

Goaltender Nicolas Rempel was particularly impressive Saturday, stopping 17 shots in the second period alone as Grand Junction attempted to fight back. Billings scored three times in the second period and never surrendered control of the game.

Bismarck swept St. Cloud, following Friday's 7-1 win with a 6-3 victory Saturday. The Bobcats went 4-for-5 on the power play Saturday.

Idaho Falls and Ogden split their opening series. The Spud Kings won Friday 3-2 behind 41 saves from Dylan McFadyen, while the Mustangs answered Saturday with a 4-1 victory.

Shreveport and Amarillo also split their series. Amarillo rallied from a 3-0 deficit Friday to win 6-5, while the Mudbugs answered Saturday with a 5-2 victory.

New Hampshire split its weekend with Elmira. The Aviators won Friday 7-5 before the Mountain Kings answered Saturday with a 6-4 victory.

Aberdeen and Minot also split their series, with the Wings taking Friday's opener 3-2 before the Minotauros won Saturday 4-3.

And Houston made history Friday.

The Bulls erased a 2-0 deficit against Lone Star by scoring five times in the third period to earn the organization's first NAHL victory, 5-3. Lone Star responded Saturday with a 3-1 victory.

The biggest takeaway from the weekend is simple.

The NAHL has already produced a crowded group at the top.

Eleven teams remain undefeated, and the standings are beginning to take shape as the league heads toward the 2026 NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota.

For the Oklahoma Warriors, Maryland Black Bears and Corpus Christi IceRays, the weekend provided another opportunity to reinforce their perfect starts while representing three organizations JuniorHockey.io is proud to partner with.

But with 11 teams still without a loss, nobody has separated themselves from the pack yet.

And that may be the most intriguing part of all.

The season is just getting started.
